PHMSA commissioned a study for Automatic and Remotely Controlled Shutoff Valves on Hazardous Liquids and Natural Gas Pipelines. The study was conducted in response to a mandate from the Pipeline Safety, Regulatory Certainty, and Job creation Act of 2011 and NTSB recommendation from the San Bruno, CA accident.
A draft report was developed and presented via webinar on October 5, along with another study being conducted on leak detection. Presentations and recordings from the webinar, including background and approach used for the studies, are available via the meeting website: Pipeline Leak Detection and Automatic/Remote Controlled Shutoff Valve Studies Web-Based Briefing
PHMSA welcomed comments through October 26 for the Leak Detection DRAFT Report: Preliminary_Draft_Valve_Study_ORNL_10-04-2012_Ver_2.pdf
